Bishop Search Update

From Search Committee Chair, Ms. Linda Anderson

The process of the search committee for the 9th Bishop of the Diocese of Wyoming has produced a slate of nominees that was announced in Casper on December 7, 2009. The committee has worked hard throughout the last year. Speaking Days were scheduled in order to hear the voice of the Diocese. The committee began to develop the profile of the Diocese which included not only the words but also programs and history. The application with essay questions followed from the profile. Once applications were completed and received the committee held the first of its discernment weekends. Criteria that was used to discern the applicants was developed from the profile. The applicants that were asked to move forward in the process received a telephone call while those not continuing received a letter. At this point the vetting process began for each candidate. A second discernment was held. Those candidates who would continue in the process again received a call asking them to visit the Diocese for a weekend of simulations. These simulations included general and personal interview questions, email simulations, discussions on the Anglican Covenant, a mock visit from the senior warden of a make believe parish. By having the applicants spend a weekend in Wyoming everyone on the committee could visit with and interview every applicant while the applicants were able to get a inside view of Wyoming. Mutual ministry in Wyoming became more clear to those applicants. The committee followed the weekends with more discernment. The final slate was not discerned until Sunday, December 6, 2009 in order to stay within the guidelines which were to announce to Oversight a slate on December 7, 2009.

While it may appear that after all that the search committee’s work is finished. The truth is that the process of the search committee for the 9th Bishop of the Diocese of Wyoming will continue until the election convention in March. We will continue to vet the candidates through a variety of methods and share that information with the Diocese. Any applicants that come through the petition process will go through the same vetting.
